Day 2 - 17th December 2023

Irazu Volcano & Cheese Experience

Departure from San Jose - Irazu Volcano - Local Cheese Tasting - Arrival in Turrialba - Night in Turrialba

This day may be the most tiring, but it will be worth the trek! We will leave San Jose by van early in the morning to make it in time to catch the sunrise over the Turrialba Volcano. At this time, we will also have breakfast and put into practice what we learned in our first photography class the night before.

After sunrise, we will visit the Irazu Volcano, its crater, and its vegetation. After lunch, we will visit one of the most important gourmet cheese factories in the country, and then, we will arrive in Turrialba, rural Costa Rica’s hidden gem.

The Irazu Volcano, located in the Cartago province of Costa Rica, is the tallest active volcano in the country, standing at an impressive 3,432 meters (11,260 feet) tall. Its name comes from the indigenous word "Istarú," which means "thunder and earthquake mountain."

Despite its active status, Irazu is an attraction due to its breathtaking views and scenic beauty. The volcano is surrounded by the lush greenery of the Irazu National Park, which provides a habitat for numerous bird species, including the resplendent quetzal, as well as a variety of flora and fauna.

The Irazu Volcano has erupted several times in the past, the most significant of which occurred in 1963. The eruption lasted for almost two years, and it caused significant damage to the surrounding towns and villages. Despite this, the volcano has been relatively dormant since then, with only minor eruptions occurring in recent years.

Visitors to the Irazu Volcano can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking, birdwatching, and sightseeing. The summit of the volcano offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including the Caribbean and Pacific coasts on clear days. There are also several hiking trails in the national park that offer opportunities to explore the volcano's craters and surrounding landscape.

The Irazu Volcano is an important natural landmark in Costa Rica, and it plays a significant role in the country's cultural and geological history. Its active status has shaped the local landscape, providing rich volcanic soils that are ideal for farming and supporting a thriving agricultural industry.

Overall, the Irazu Volcano is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Costa Rica.

Its stunning beauty, unique geology, and rich cultural history make it a fascinating and unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.
